Matt Russell has worked on the HITZ programme with Gloucester Rugby since 2017, supporting young adults to get their lives on the right path. A huge believer in the importance of enjoying what you do, he helps students discover their passion and supports them in taking the first steps to becoming successful. Rugby has helped Matt develop his own skills and has spent the last 8 years working within the rugby world to help support others. Through rugby, Matt was introduced to the #HITZFamily and has been working to build and grow the programme ever since.
Mike Hoult has worked as a HITZ tutor since 2016, starting HITZ delivery and building a programme at Bath before making a transfer closer to home to help restart the Gloucester Rugby HITZ programme. Being a huge Gloucester Rugby fan this was an exciting opportunity for him. He is enjoying being part of the growth and development of the programme and seeing so many successes. Providing everyone an opportunity and giving everyone a platform to restart their education, career and sometimes life is the best part of the job. He loves a challenge and likes being under pressure and out of his comfort zone. A family man with a recent newborn, he has enjoyed being part of the #HITZFamily.
Laura Wright - Support Coordinator
Hi, I’m Laura, I have been working on the Hitz programme for over a year and love what the HITZ programme stands for. I have had a varied career studying Art and working in Retail before to moving into education. I have 8 years’ experience of working on various Education & Training programmes which support in changing lives from adults to young persons, no matter how big or small. Hitz is a very rewarding programme and the range of enrichment activities that the participants get to experience is brilliant. It is definitely a great programme to be a part of and support all of the Premiership Rugby Hitz programmes.
In my spare time I enjoy going to Rugby and Netball games, spending time with family, friends, visiting new places in both the UK and abroad and I love watching Friends TV show!
Jared’s Journey: From HITZ to Success
Gloucester Rugby’s Jared Spence claimed the SCL BREAKTHRU Achiever of the Year Award at the 2019 Premiership Rugby Parliamentary Awards, which took centre stage at the House of Commons.
“It means a lot to have won the award,” said Jared.
“I’ve had quite a difficult time and I feel this is one of the biggest points in my life. If you were to tell me a year ago that I would be here winning this award, I wouldn’t have believed anything like this could happen. My family and friends have definitely noticed a difference in me – I would just sit at home doing the bare minimum.
“Now I’m trying to make myself a better person and I wake up every day thinking what can I do today to better myself. I feel a lot more confident now than a year or two ago. I’ve just got my level two gym instructor qualification and now I’m aiming for level three – I want to be a personal trainer. It’s going to be hard, but I’ll get there.”
Jared, (HITZ Graduate), has used his passion to drive himself onto something that can help everyone – with the help of the Gloucester Rugby HITZ traineeship; he has started his path to become a personal trainer.
HITZ is an award-winning 15-week traineeship that provides unique learning, enrichment and work experience opportunities for 16-24 year olds if you are not currently in education, work or training. HITZ is sponsored by Land Rover Rugby, Comic Relief and Wooden Spoon. HITZ develops interview skills, social and life skills all in one programme.
Alongside gaining Maths, English and a variety of industry specific qualifications, one part of the HITZ programme involves use of the gym, where students can develop themselves further, by using the excellent facilities at DW Fitness First, in Gloucester. During this time on the course, Jared impressed many of the employees there, thanks to his hard work and ambition, took the skills and confidence from this course, and transformed it into employment.
“I got into going to the gym to help out with my own problems and I thought as a PT I might be able to help other people out with their problems. HITZ helped me start that journey by getting me the level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification and first aid.
HITZ put me in a better place, it gave me ambition and made me see how I can achieve and succeed. If it wasn’t for HITZ I wouldn’t have a job, they gave me the skills and the confidence to not panic. Low confidence has been a massive problem all my life but now, I’m talking to hundreds of people a day at work. HITZ got me out of that low confidence trap where a-lot of other places (like school and training providers) couldn’t.
Getting a job a DW is huge for me because not only am I earning money, I can learn from all the personal trainers here and put what I learnt at HITZ into practice.”
Jared – Front of House Assistant (former ITZ Student)
We asked Jared’s team leader why he thought DW supports the HITZ programme and what changes he had seen in Jared.
“I think being able to support Gloucester Rugby as the biggest sporting club in the area is really beneficial, especially with all of the community work they do. By offering the HITZ students use of the gym, we can see the amazing change in each and every one of them. You know, in week 1, they come in, they don’t have any social skills or any ‘oomph’ about them, and by the end of the 15 weeks, they all say hello, they seem keen and happier and more like a team. They join in with the classes here you know and it looks like a lot of these guys who have the rough starts in life start to conduct themselves back into the community.
We offered Jared the job here as front of house staff because we saw the potential in him and how he grew doing his work placement. We can see his ambition and DW Fitness First wants to help with that.”
Errol – Front of House Manager
“Here at DWFF we are proud to be a part of the local community and helping to support the Gloucester HITZ programme. We hope that Jared can continue his journey now with DWFF and follow his dreams of becoming a Personal Trainer with the club.”
Matt – General Manager
Before HITZ James was part of the Gloucester Rugby active futures programme due to his love of sports and in particular rugby. Whilst on the programme, he heard about the HITZ course and applied straight away as he was out of education and unable to find a job. He had previous jobs as a cleaner at premier inn but couldn’t communicate easily with the other workers there.
On the Programme:
James was a delight to have on the course but it was clear that communication was a very big problem with him with several occasions causing him to be very uncomfortable but unable to express this. He would also never ask for help during class work, and would sit there for hours at a tie not doing any work because he was unable to ask for help. Through the course, the tutor and officer worked very closely with this communication barrier and by the end of the 12 weeks, James wasn’t just asking for help from the staff, but would also ask other people in the group for help.
Quotes from and about Young Person:
“I loved my placement as I really enjoying helping others and working at Kingsholm. I also enjoyed learning the interview skills with HITZ and Barclays life because I think it helped me get a Job. I think my confidence working with other people has gotten a lot better now and I like meeting and working with new people.” – James Marshall, Gloucester Rugby HITZ Graduate
